Sunset Acres originally opened in 1969 and is now a 225-home, resident-owned manufactured home community. That transition didn’t happen overnight.
In 2019, we formed the Sunset Acres Residents Association, Inc., and started on the path to resident ownership. That’s when, with the help of Cooperative Development Institute and ROC USA, LLC, we purchased and took control of our community on July 15, 2020.
Now, the resident-owned community (ROC) is not only a successful business, but also a thriving neighborhood.
The process of the resident-owned community buying the land beneath our neighborhood brought this community closer together. Not only do we know far more of our neighbors than ever before, but we look out for one another, too. And with no outside landlord to report to, we’re the envy of other nearby manufactured home communities.
Our Member households elect our Board of Directors, which works with a property management firm and also appoints various volunteer committees to help with special projects, celebrations, community improvements and more. The Board submits a budget every year, and the entire Membership votes on it and any changes to the rent before the budget becomes official. We’re running the business that is our community on our terms, by our rules, for the betterment of ourselves and our neighbors.
Sunset Acres is a well-established community in Plainville, MA, for people aged 55 and over, who enjoy convenient access to the city, and also want to be close to an abundance of outdoor activities. We are located just 35 miles from Boston and 15 miles from Providence, R.I. Sunset Acres is an ideal spot for outdoor lovers with The Big Apple Farm and Diamond Hill Vineyards, both a 20-minute drive away. Also, the WWI Memorial Park and Zoo is just two miles from our community. Known for its butterfly garden, huge playset and interactive animal feedings, this fun park is a 5-minute drive away. In the center of town you will find An Unlikely Story Bookstore, a charming book shop with amazing coffee and specialty treats.
We have a very robust Senior Center that hosts many varied events throughout the year for active seniors. Wrentham Village Premium Outlets and Patriot Place offer shopping, dining, a movie theater and many other activities.
Free concerts at Teleford Park in the summer as well as swimming and boating at local lakes are just a few of the outdoor activities at our fingertips.
